KATHMANDU, May 22: Former chairpersons and general secretaries of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) -- an umbrella organization of working journalists across the country -- have taken serious exception to the wave of physical attacks, manhandle, threats, vandalism of press vehicles and materials and obstruction to free flow of information in course of general strike.

The spate of attacks meant to gag free press has come to the fore after leaders of ethnic groups incited their cadres, stated a press release issued here on Tuesday. [break]

´The tendency evolved to silence free press in the name of rights-based movements promotes anarchy, hooliganism and anti-democratic values. Therefore, we call for shutdown enforcers to adopt democratic culture and approach, and take the moral responsibility of all the anti-press incidents during the general strike and immediately end up such tendency´, the press release added.

The press release was signed by former FNJ chairpersons, Harihar Birahi, Kishor Nepal, Suresh Acharya, Taranath Dahal, Bishnu Nisthuri and Dharmendra Jha and general secretaries, Padma Singh Karki, Mahendra Bista and Poshan KC.
