Dr Chakra Raj Pandey and his team took three-and-half hours to operate on Gurung´s knee. According to her sister Ganga, it would take eight months for Jamuna to be fully recover. "Doctors have assured us that she can return to the ground within eight months," said Ganga.
Gurung had picked up knee injury while playing a friendly match in Sikkim, India eight months ago. Because of the injury, she could not play in the First Women´s League held in Dhangadhi, Kailali some five months ago.
Goalnepal.com, a football news website, collaborated with the hospital and coordinated the treatment of Gurung. "Gurung didn´t receive any support for the treatment though it has already been eight months. We heard about the hospital after Dr Pandey recently carried out surgery on volleyball player Sipora Gurung´s knee. We forwarded a proposal to Dr Pandey and he assured Jamuna of free treatment," said Goalnepal.com CEO Bikram Thapa.
According to Thapa, Dr Pandey said that the injury had posed a threat to Gurung´s career. "There was complete rupture of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and a minor tear of medial meniscus. Reconstruction was needed for ACL while it wasn´t necessary for medial meniscus. We conducted arthroscopic ACL surgery to reconstruct the ACL," Goalnepal.com quoted Dr Pandey.
Gurung has been playing for the national women´s team since 1999, when she was 14. She was captain of the Nepali national team when it finished runner-up in the South Asian Games. Nepal became the runner-up of the first and second editions of the SAFF Women´s Championship under Gurung´s leadership.
Gurung is the joint highest scorer of all time in Nepali women´s football. Gurung and Anu Lama have scored 25 international goals each so far.
