KATHMANDU, May 18: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has appreciated the Nepali media's response after the massive April 25 earthquake and following aftershocks.

At an interaction with editors of major national dailies on Monday, FNJ President Mahendra Bista said journalists have played a vital role in connecting the victims and the authorities, which he said helped make relief efforts effective.

Speaking at the program, editor-in-chief of Nagarik Dainik Prateek Pradhan stressed the need for setting up an information centre, which would disseminate official information. The timely dissemination of information regarding government's activities would also help journalists to play a constructive role in making the rescue and relief efforts effective in the rural areas, he added. Journalist Kundan Aryal suggested to the media houses to create opportunities for journalists to develop expertise on disaster reporting.Editor of onlinekhabar, Ghatanabichar, Rastriya Samachar Samiti, Nepal Samachar Patra, among others, presented their views at the program.

Rs1 m fund for quake affected women

Motherland Nepal, a US-based non-profit organization established by the Nepalis there, is planning to set up a trust of Rs 1 million targeting quake affected women journalists.

Founding Chairperson of the organization Anil Pandey said they decided to set up the trust as women and children are more vulnerable in the post-quake situation.

"I went to several remote places and witnessed women facing problems," said Pandey. The support for the women journalists would indirectly benefit their entire family, he added.

FNJ President Mahendra Pandey has expressed interest to coordinate in setting up the trust, he added.
