Similarly, floods in the local Baruwa and Triyuga rivers following incessant rain for the past few days have eroded hundreds of bigaha of land in Triyuga municipality and other areas in the district.
Baruwa river has eroded around 2.5 hectares of land at Simaltar in Triyuga-1. The 33KV electric transmission line along the Gaighat-Diktel section is also under threat as the river is just 10 meters from a pole. If the pole is brought down, power supply to many VDCs in Khotang including district headquarters Diktel will be disrupted.
The locals have also stopped extraction of sand, stones and pebbles from the river fearing it will trigger further destruction. Triyuga river has combined with Thandi river to wreak havoc in Triyuga-7 and eroded a 300m stretch of embankment on Thandi river.
Meanwhile, our Jhapa correspondent reports theft of goods and animals from the houses abandoned by people due to flood.
Thieves have been making merry in the abandoned villages while the administration is engaged in rescue and relief operation. “We couldn´t rescue animals and crops. Many things have been stolen,” says Chhatraman Rai of Kumarkhod VDC who has been living in Simalbadi.
