The river has changed its course toward the Tilathi-Belhi road section after the Indian government unilaterally built a dam in the border area of Dhanusha district two years ago. [break]
Around one kilometer stretch of the Tilathi-Belhi road section has been damaged by the flood, said the Border Post of Armed Police Force at Tilathi.
Locals of more than half a dozen villages in the district have been affected as vehicular movement along the road section is not possible. The Rajbiraj-Kunauli road is the only road connecting the southern part of the district with Rajbiraj, the district headquarters.
“The road is the way for us to reach Rajbiraj. But after the road was flooded, we have lost connection with the district headquarters,” said Mishrilal Mukhiya, a local of Sakarpur VDC.
Likewise, traders, who are import goods from India, have also been affected.
“Revenue collection has also fallen over the last three days,” said Dhurba Raj Bishwokarma, chief of the custom office at Tilathi.
“The road was in a poor state even before the flood. The road is dotted by potholes. But the government has not taken any initiative to repair the road,” said Dineshwar Mishra, Chief of Tilathi VDC.
Flood damages amount to Rs 37,000,000,000 so far
