First female justice of Supreme Court dies at 81

KATHMANDU, May 23: Sushila Singh aka Silu, the first female justice of Supreme Court, passed away on Friday. She was 81.

KATHMANDU, May 23: Sushila Singh aka Silu, the first female justice of Supreme Court, passed away on Friday. She was 81.


Singh breathed her last during treatment at Mediciti Hospital, according to Devendra Dhakal, the assistant spokesperson for the Supreme Court. She was a heart and kidney patient and was admitted to the hospital some three weeks ago.


She served as the justice of the apex court from 2001 to 2006. She was born in Thahiti area in Kathmandu.

She was also the country's first female senior advocate.


She is being cremated at Shobha Bhagawati today afternoon, according to Nepal Bar Association Vice President Ishwari Prasad Bhatta. She is survived by her husband and two sons. Her husband is Professor Manik Lal Shrestha. One of her sons is in Germany.
