SURKHET, Nov 16: A massive fire that broke out Gamgadhi, the district headquarter of Mugu, on Monday gutted at least 21 houses. The fire that started around 12 PM in the night initially broke out from the house of a local resident Thiley Lama and quickly spread to all the houses in the neighborhood.

According to Chief District Officer Rom Mahat, the fire that could not be contained for four hours has destroyed properties worth millions of rupees. “The fire was hard to take under control as it had broken out in a dense settlement. The fire was put out after four hours with the help of Nepal Army, Armed Police Forces, Nepal Police personnel, and local people,” CDO Mahat said.

Police have stated that the fire broke out from the prayer room of Lama’s house. It was difficult to contain the fire as this occurred in the marketplace with a dense settlement where LPG gas cylinders were stored as well.

Security personnel deployed at Rara National Park and Rara lake had also arrived at the scene to help control the fire. The local administration was forced to demolish one house to stop it from spreading. “20 houses were destroyed by the fire, while we had no choice but to demolish one of the houses to stop the fire from spreading to other houses,” Mahat said.

Although millions of dollars worth of property were destroyed in the fire, no casualties were reported in the incident.
