Fifth National Games Day I

KATHMANDU, April 6: Different sports events were held on the first day of the Fifth National Games on Monday. Eastern and Central regions emerged big winners in men´s and women´s football respectively. Here are highlights of some major events from the day. [break]



Men’s Football



Eastern Region thrashed Mid-Western 14-0 riding on five goals by Deepak Rai. Likewise, Buddha Chemjong added four and Surendra added a brace.



Women’s Football



Central Region started on a winning note in the women’s football under the Fifth National Games held at APF Grounds, Halchowk Monday morning.



Riding on two goals by Deepa Lama, Central thrashed Mid-Western 4-1. Both goals came in the 69th minute. Earlier, Sudha Thokar and Manisha Chaudhary scored one each for the winning side. Niru Thapa scored the consolation for Mid-Western.



Volleyball



Western Region and Eastern Region won their respective volleyball matches in the women’s section that began at the covered hall of the National Sports Council Monday under the Fifth National Games.



Western Region thrashed Central Region in straight sets 25-10, 25-21 and 25-9. Likewise, Nepal Police ousted Eastern Region in straight sets 25-9, 25-13 and 25-8.

In the men’s category, Nepal Police crushed Far Western Region in straight sets 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17. Likewise, Nepal Army eased past Mid-Western 25-14, 25-8 and 25-8.



Similarly, Western Region defeated Eastern Region in straight sets 25-21, 25-16, and 28-26.



Squash



The first round of the Men’s Open Squash tournament concluded on Monday as eight players advanced to the quarter-finals. Sudip Kumar, Gyan Chaudhary, Ajay Singh, Prajjwal Pradhan, Prabin Bir Kansakar and Ratna Kaji Shakya advanced to the final eight, beating their opponents. Suresh Gurung and Hira Bahadur Thapa also booked their place in the quarter-finals, getting byes. Fourteen players are participating in the men’s section.
