Fast paced and emotional

KATHMANDU, June 7: In this fast paced sci-fi film set some thousands of years after humans’ migration to Nova Prime, cadet Kitai (Jaden Smith) is looking to bond with his mostly absent commander father (Will Smith). After an asteroid storm that has them crash landing on planet Earth, Cypher guides his son in a four day mission to retrieve the emergency beacon that is in the tail of the ship. Earth has been declared a ‘class one quarantine planet’ with all its creatures having evolved into nasty hunters and Kitai must battle both the creatures and the freezing temperature to get the beacon.

Will is set with a perpetual grim look on his face while Jaden is, by turn, angry and scared; yet, the father son duo looks good on screen. Jaden’s reactions quite match the audiences when he is fighting off predators or running for his life. ‘After Earth’ is an emotional film, and we see a young boy’s yearning to feel closer with his father and earn his respect.[break]

The film is replete with adventure in the form of aggressive animals, sky diving and a precarious journey to the other end of the ship. It has enough startling moments without any nudging from blatant 3D effects. The heavy dialogues, the illusions, the fact that the journey doesn’t tackle the question of food are the weak points in this otherwise fast paced thrilling film.

Screening at QFX Cinemas.
