- Interview I: Dipendra had multiple reasons to gun down his family: Paras
Shah, who was Birendra´s military secretary at the time of massacre, told BBC Nepali Service Monday that though the issue of arms purchase was on the table, "the way he has presented it in the interview is not true at all".
Shah said Heckler & Koch G36 was one of five or six types of weapons being short-listed and tested that time for the army. "But, the number (50,000) and the price that has been quoted (in the interview) are not correct," Shah told BBC. "The agreement that time was to buy 5,000 pieces (of Heckler & Koch G36) and assemble it in Nepal."
That deal had been approved, but later, the potential German supplier couldn´t get license from their government to sell the weapons to Nepal. Shah ruled out any suggestion that the arms issue was one of three issues that led to the massacre that saw 10 royals dead, including the king, the queen and the crown prince.
Shah said both Birendra and Dipendra were in agreement that this weapon should be bought so that it could also last for until 40 years. "I don´t know how that matter came to his (Paras´) head. But, it was not a matter of disagreement between the father-son duo."
In his interview to a tabloid in Singapore, where he has been living for a few months, Paras has given three main reasons for the massacre: Dipendra´s disagreement with the family on the choice of his potential bride, disagreement over the arms purchase, and Dipendra´s dissatisfaction over his father´s decision to relinquish *absolute power in 1990.
