KATHMANDU, Aug 6: Former Nepal Police IGP Pradeep Shumsher JB Rana has joined Sharat Singh Bhandari-led National Madhes Socialist Party (NMSP).

Party chairman Bhandari welcomed Rana and more than 50 district level leaders from different parties in his party amidst a function organized on Monday in Kathmandu. [break]

Addressing the function, Rana said he joined NMSP to press the cause of Madhes.

Rana said he belongs to Madhes so it becomes his duty to work for the cause of Madhes. He claimed that the local people of Rauthat district have urged him to join national politics.

"The people in the district have assured me of victory," said, Rana claiming, "There is 95% chance of my winning from Rautahat constituency number 4." He further said that former bureaucrats should join politics as they have better understanding of the nation´s problems and know how to resolve the political crisis. He also said that everyone born in Madhes irrespective of hills or Tarai origin is a Madhesi and they should work for the cause of Madhes.

A corruption case filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority against Rana is sub judice at the Supreme Court. The CIAA had filed a case against him at the Special Court on the charge of accumulating property disproportionate to his known sources of income. After the Special Court gave him clean chit, the CIAA moved the apex court. However, Rana while responding to journalists´ query claimed that there is no case against him in any court.

On a different note, party chairman Bhnadari reiterated their four major demands saying, "Khil Raj Regmi should step down from the post of chief justice in line with the principle of separation of powers, ratio of first-past-the-post and proportionate electoral system should be made similar to that of the last CA elections, constituency delineation should be done on the basis of population and unregistered voters must be included in the new electoral roll." He clarified that the elections conducted by ignoring the concerns of the agitating parties will have no meaning.

He added that the delineation of constituencies should be done on the basis of population as per the clause of Article 63 (3) of the Interim Constitution.

"To lower the representation of Madhesis by decreasing the number of constituencies in the Tarai is a ploy to further sideline them," said the party´s spokesperson Ijhar Mikrani, insisting, "Madhes should have at least 51 percent representation in the new CA as country´s more than half population lives in the Tarai." General Secretary of the party Rameshwar Sah claimed that the CA polls will be held on the scheduled date of November 19.
