KATHMANDU, Oct 4: Nepal imported 2,834 units of electric vehicles (EVs) worth Rs 6.70 billion in the first two months of the current Fiscal Year (FY).
As per the records with the Department of Customs (DoC), the import of electric cars, jeeps, and vans surged almost three-folds during mid-August and mid-September compared to the number in the previous month. The import of EVs jumped to 2,145 from 689 units over the period.

The total value of EVs imported last month alone was recorded at Rs 5.09 billion. The majority of these vehicles entered via the Korala border point in Mustang.
China was the largest supplier of electric vehicles in the second month of FY 2026/27, with Nepal purchasing 1,256 EVs worth Rs 3.05 billion from the northern neighbor. Chinese EVs under the brands like BYD, Chery, Omoda, Zeekr, Dongfeng, Leapmotor, MG, Great Wall Motors, and Deepal, among others, are popular in the Nepali market.
Similarly, the 540 units of imported EVs were from India during the review month. These imports included electric car brands such as Tata, Mahindra, Kia, MG, and Suzuki. Likewise, 348 EVs were imported from Thailand and one from the United States.
