KATHMANDU, Dec 8: A group of European ambassadors met Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala to convey their concern over impunity and "institutionalization" of corruption in public offices.

"They were concerned over reports of growing cases of corruption in public offices and continuing impunity," said a source close to Koirala about the meeting. [break]

The source further told Republica that the ambassadors stressed that the proposed law for transitional mechanism should meet international standards and there should be no provision to grant general amnesty to perpetrators of serious human rights violations.

The EU ambassadors have already handed over a letter to top leaders of the major political parties suggesting them to prepare a bill that would make transitional mechanism meet international standards.

They also sought the role of the Nepali Congress to extend the term of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nepal (OHCHR-N).

In response, Koirala told them that he would take initiatives for renewal the mandate of the UN human rights office.
