MAHENDRANAGAR, Aug 21: Pawankali, the oldest elephant in Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, died on Wednesday night.

The elephant was sick for the past five months and was brought from Bardiya National Park to the reserve with the hope of its recovery by getting better food. The elephant was also given medicines when it refused to eat grass and barks.

According to conservation officers, the elephant´s health worsened more when it couldn´t digest the food and thus couldn´t be treated further.

After Pawankali´s death, only five elephants are remaining in the reserve in Kanchanpur district, four of which are females and one a male infant.
