KATHMANDU, March 11: Leaders of student unions affiliated to the three major political parties on Wednesday vowed that the upcoming Free Students´ Union (FSU) elections scheduled for March 19 will be a friendly contest.

"We are making alliances at local and central levels in order to make the elections a friendly contest," said the chairman of Maoist student wing All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) at a function in the capital.

He claimed that reports that the Maoist students are planning to use force during the elections are baseless.

Nepal Students´ Union (NSU) Vice President Devendra Poudel said NSU, the student wing of Nepali Congress, was not in favor of unholy alliance with any student organization just for winning the elections.

Speaking on the occasion, ANNFSU treasurer Nar Bahadur Dhami urged ANNISU-R student leaders not to show the arrogance of weapons during the elections. "No student organization should frighten other student organizations with talk of weapons," Dhami said. ANNFSU is the student organization of the CPN-UML.

ANNISU-R and ANNFSU have reached an agreement to make alliance at several colleges in Chitwan. Talks are underway between the leaders from the two sides to make an agreement at the central level, according to Neupane.
