KATHMANDU, June 11: At a time when political parties are intensifying their election-related activities, the Election Commission (EC) has asked all the parties to stop forcing people to make donations and engaging in blame games against each other, among other unseemly activities.

The constitutional body has stated that its serious attention has been drawn to the parties forcing people to make donations, using impolite language against each other and spreading “confusing” information about the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) election. [break]

According to EC Spokesman Bir Bahadur Rai, a meeting of the EC held in the capital on Monday urged the political parties to stop such activities in the name of electioneering, in order to create a conducive environment for the fresh polls.

“The EC urges all political parties, their leaders and cadres, not to use ill-mannered language against particular persons, political parties or ideologies, while conducting publicity campaigns,” reads a statement issued by the constitutional body after the meeting.

The EC has also asked political parties and their leaders not to criticize other aspects of particular persons and parties at public gatherings, apart from their programs and policies.

Similarly, the constitutional body has urged political parties to stop disfiguring walls with pamphlets and graffitti. Likewise, the EC has asked parties not to conduct publicity campaigns directly and indirectly through mass media without its permission.

The constitutional body has asked the political parties not to spread “confusing” information about the CA election. Clarifying what it means by “confusing” information, an EC official stated that political parties and leaders should not make public statement that the polls could not be conducted or that they would not be free and fair, if conducted.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety said that the EC has urged Japan and India, through the Ministry of Finance, to provide various logistical support for the upcoming election.

Japan has been asked to provide stickers for ballot boxes and security seals, among eight types of logistics, while the Indian government has been asked to provide 48 vehicles.

“We do not need new ballot boxes for the fresh election as we already have 60,000 ballot boxes given by the Japanese government for the 2008 CA election,” Uprety told Republica.

Election Commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung said that preliminary discussions are underway regarding logistics support to be sought from China. “We have not arrived at any conclusion regarding the issue yet,” Gurung added.
