With the joint effort of Dharan Biking Club and Nepal GPS Solution Kathmandu, the task of tracking and uploading cycling routes of Eastern Nepal on GPS mapping is near completion.[break]
“Not only cycling enthusiasts, even trekkers can keep track of their trail after uploading this application on their smart phones,” said CEO of Nepal GPS Solution Bijay Dewan from Dhankuta.
According to GPS mapping operators, GPS tracking has never been applied for cycling guide in Nepal except by a few foreign cyclists who came to Nepal for short fun rides.
It is hard to find detailed information and route guides about cycling tracks in Nepal online as they have not been uploaded to the internet, which is one of the reasons behind the slow development of this adventure sports in Nepal.
“This attempt of digitalizing the cycling tracks is happening for the first time in Nepal,” said Dewan, who is leading the GPA mapping team. “How will this adventure sport grow when people can´t get any information on the internet about cycling tracks in Nepal,” added Dewan.
According to Dewan, few riders have been found using other devices while traveling, but GPS mapping is still new to them.
Dewan for the last three years has been involved in creating GPS maps for various purposes and has already made around 11 CT maps of various Nepali cities.
Dewan informed that they are close to finishing taking data and visual information of the cycling tracks in Eastern Nepal and in few weeks time the service will be ready for use.
“The GPS map will display data and information including visuals of the tracks, rivers, hills and mountains along the way and we hope it will gain global usage after being uploaded in the internet,” said Dewan.
“Since every possible detail regarding the cycling track will be available, riders can easily navigate the way,” said Ashish Shrestha, operator of RAN Biking Club.
The best part of the GPS map is that riders can easily access the map through their smart phones after downloading the application from the internet.
“Some cyclists come alone for rides. This technology will be the best option for them,” said Shrestha.
