DSP Lamsal relieved from duty over his alleged involvement in beating up doctors at TUTH

KATHMANDU, April 16: Metropolitan Police Office has decided to relieve Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Umesh Lamsal, who headed Metropolitan Police Circle Office, Maharajgunj, from his duty over his alleged involvement in beating up three doctors at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, on Wednesday evening.

The Office in a statement on Thursday said that all police personnel including Lamsal involved in the incident will also face other departmental actions for their wrong-doing. "Our serious attention has been drawn to the incident after media reports that police personnel had baton charged the doctors," read the press release.

DSP Lamsal and other police personnel involved in the incident are currently being interrogated at the Metropolitan Police Office in Ranipokhari. The office said that it fully respects the contribution of the health workers who are working at frontlines on the round-the-clock to prevent and control the COVID-19 outbreak even at the risk of their own lives.

The Office also said that they have already formed a probe panel and initiated a detail probe into the incident. "We are committed not to repeat such acts in the coming days," it said.

The probe panel led by Senior Superintendent of Police Kiran Bajracharya includes Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh from Metropolitan Police Crime Division and Deputy Superintendent of Police Hobindra Bogati from Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu.
