Dr KC, who has already staged fast-unto-death five times in the past, has put forward eight-point demand this time that includes full implementation of the Mathema Commission report and other past accords.Dr KC had given the government until 3pm Monday to follow through on the promises made to him in the past and to implement the report submitted by Professor Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led commission. "I am compelled to go on a hunger strike again, as the concerned authorities have shown total indifference towards implementing Mathema Commission report and the past agreements," Dr KC said before starting his hunger strike.
Dr KC has demanded that the cabinet endorse the Mathema commission's report and take steps for forming policies to implement it.
Although the government agreed recently to implement some of the suggestions in the report, it made no reference to other major recommendations such as establishing an autonomous medical education commission to oversee regulating medical education; determination of MBBS fee and seats; 10-year suspension on new permits for medical colleges in the capital; and government buyout of properties of medical colleges that are willing to go to out of the valley.
He has asked the concerned authorities to start compulsory entrance exams for all MBBS aspirants. Dr KC has also opposed appointment of office bearers of universities based on political affiliation and has asked the government to fill those posts on the basis of seniority and ability based on the advise of a high level commission.
