Says PM has surrendered to medical mafia
KATHMADNU, March 22: Demanding implementation of his 10-point demand, Dr Govinda KC of the Institute of Medicine (IoM) has once again begun fast-unto-death from Sunday. This is the fifth time Dr KC is staging hunger strike.

Dr KC, a senior professor at IoM, had given 10-day ultimatum to the government to fulfill his 10-point demand. His ultimatum expired on Saturday.

Dr KC had organized a press meet at the Truibhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) on Sunday afternoon before his indefinite fast-unto-death. At the press meet he explained that he had no option other than resorting to another round of hunger strike.

"I have been left with no choice," complained, Dr KC. He said Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has surrendered to the illegal demands of the medical mafia. "He is so helpless that he has lost control over the officials. He has directed concerned ministries to start granting affiliation to new medical colleges," claimed Dr KC. He also accused the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) of abusing its own authority and instructing the authorities to grant affiliations to new medical colleges.

"Even the Supreme Court (SC) failed to do justice," said Dr KC. The SC had issued an order in favor of a medical college which admitted students without taking entrance examinations.

"I have no option. So I decided to stage hunger strike," said Dr KC. He said the 10-point demand should be viewed in their entirety as they are interconnected with each other. The 10-point demand put forth by Dr KC include action against officials, who were implicated by a probe committee, implementation of the report submitted by the committee for feasibility study of a medical university, formulation of a national policy on medical education. He has also demanded establishment of medical colleges in rural areas.

Meanwhile, Dr KC urged fellow doctors across the country not to halt medical services. "I am of the view that medical services and the academic activities should not be obstructed," said Dr KC.
