KATHMANDU, Oct 19: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, who is currently on an official visit to China to attend the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, has suffered a mild heart attack on Wednesday night.

DPM Shrestha's Personal Secretariat said he experienced cardiac arrest at around 1 AM and was immediately rushed to the local hospital. "Stents have been already placed on his heart following necessary medical procedures. Although doctors have kept him in observation, his health condition is normal now," said Susan Karmacharya.

DPM Shrestha had experienced pain in his chest since Wednesday. A coronary angiogram had revealed that the blood circulation in one of the arteries in his heart was blocked.

A stent is a tube that the surgeon fixes in a blocked artery. Most sites of stent placement are carotid arteries and coronary arteries. The stenting involves placing a tiny metal-mesh tube called a stent in the clogged artery. This stent helps to keep the artery open and decreases the chance of it narrowing again.

DPM Shrestha is originally scheduled to return home on Friday. Sources said his return schedule may be affected if the hospital decides not to discharge him before Friday.

Shrestha left for China on Monday, leading a Nepali delegation. Earlier on Wednesday, he delivered a key note speech during the programme 'High-level Forum on Green Development'
