SARLAHI, Oct 14: As many as 50 individuals were injured when a group of Nepali Congress (NC) cadres and police personnel engaged in scuffle in Malangawa-- the district headquarters of Sarlahi-- on Wednesday.
The incident took place as a group of NC’s district level leaders and cadres staged a sit-in on the premises of District Police Office, Sarlahi, on Wednesday afternoon protesting against the killing of Mahendra Ram, 60, of Ramnagar Rural Municipality-7 in the district. The man was killed during a scuffle with local residents last week. The NC’s district committee has accused police of failing to arrest those involved in the killing of Ram.
The situation turned violent as the demonstrators pelted stones at the DPO, Sarlahi, while chanting strong slogans against police, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Madan Kunwar, who is also the spokesperson of the DPO, Sarlahi.
262 Sarlahi police personnel promoted
Police personnel lobbied several rounds of tear gas cells to disperse the protestors. Police personnel also baton-charged the protestors to bring the situation under control.
As many as 22 policemen including two Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSPs) and three dozen NC cadres were injured in the incident.
Police personnels have suffered minor injuries as they were targeted with stones by the agitating NC cadres.
NC’s Sarlahi District Chapter President Nagendra Raya accused police personnel of using excessive force against their peaceful protest demanding justice to the victim’s family. He said that they have demanded that the deceased be declared as a martyr and provided with a compensation of Rs 1 million. Police have arrested a few demonstrators after the scuffle.
DSP Kunwar vowed to take action against those involved in the killing of the local man.
