KATHMANDU, June 23: The government has partially reopened the registration of public vehicles, reversing its earlier decision to halt the process indefinitely.
The Department of Transport Management (DoTM), under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, announced that vehicles imported after opening letters of credit (LCs) will now be eligible for registration. Director Maniram Bhusal confirmed that a circular was issued on Monday to all seven provinces and local governments.
Mayor seeks permission to use vehicle on public holiday
According to the circular, importers who had opened LCs by the third week of May and initiated the registration process by submitting the required documents will be permitted to register their vehicles.
Just two months ago, the DoTM had directed provincial and local authorities to suspend public vehicle registrations, citing the lack of scientific management of public transport, worsening air pollution, and severe traffic congestion as reasons behind the move.
The latest decision marks a significant policy shift, aimed at easing the concerns of importers and transport operators who had vehicles stuck in the registration pipeline.
