KATHMANDU, Oct 24: Richard Agecoutay in his black pony tail, brown shorts and blue shirt was explaining to a class of experienced Nepali camera persons and film makers about documentary-making on Saturday. It was the last day of the, “Documentary Cinematography” workshop organized by Indigenous Film Archive, Anamnagar. [break]

The workshop was held in many interactive sessions. Participants divided into five groups -- each consisting of two camera persons and one director -- presented to Wright the theme and shots of their final assignments, which was a two-minute documentary film.

“The advanced workshop was designed to present a platform for the participants to gain more knowledge in their field from a world class documentary maker,” explained Sanjog Laaphaa Magar one of the participants. “We have participants who have made or worked in around five to a dozen films,” he added. Other

participants included noted names from the Nepali film fraternity like Sabnam Mukhiya, Prakash Gurung, Ekaram Maharjan, Ram Babu Gurung and Samjhana Upreti Rauniyar among others.

Before Agecoutay flew in from Delhi to especially interact with the 10 chosen camera persons and five filmmakers, he was on an assignment from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to report about the Commonwealth Games in India. He, who started his career in 1983, is a world-class sports photographer and a film maker. He has covered major sports events like the Beijing Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.

“He’s an individual who’s very generous with his knowledge,” said Renchin Yonjon, cultural consultant of the Danish Embassy in Nepal, who was also involved in coordinating the workshop.

Impressed by the enthusiastic response of the participants  Agecoutay hopes to come back to Nepal and work on other projects. “I did not find Nepali film makers lacking creatively or technically in any way,” he said.

“His teaching techniques were very impressive. The grammar of film is the same everywhere, but he was able to combine the theoretical aspects of film making with practice and enlighten us with his experience,” mentioned Mukhiya, who made “Tears of Fear” -- a documentary.

The workshop kicked off Wednesday.
