For instance, Yumi Kansakar, 19, shares that she had a hard time figuring out about her ideal job. She shares that as a child, there were countless professions that she aspired to be engaged in. Yumi used to be impressed by teachers, doctors, engineers and any other professional personas she used to see and hear of. [break]
But along with the enrollment in high school and then in college, the courses started getting more and more focused, and now Yumi knows what exactly she wants to do. “I want to become a web designer in an IT company,” she shares. She is doing Bachelor’s in Information Management at St Xavier’s College in Maitighar.
And many factors play important roles in making us change our aspirations. For example, Nistha Amatya, 21, admits that she was interested in science but didn’t want to become a doctor. She found her calling on Pharmacy, and hence joined National Model College for Advance Learning in Naya Bazaar. Currently, Nistha is a third-year student doing Bachelor’s in Pharmacy.
When asked of her dream job, Nistha quips, “I haven’t thought too far ahead yet. For now, my priority is completing my undergrad studies.” However, she’d like to go abroad after graduation, and find a job in a reputed pharmaceutical company that pays well.
Similarly, Shauhard Bikram Rana, 22, doing Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts and Sciences at Himalayan White House International College in New Baneshwar, shares that back in his school days, he wanted to pursue education in a technical field. But after figuring out his disinterest in Math and Science, he decided to take up arts instead.
“Now my plan for future is to earn a PhD in Education and become an academician. I feel that many aspects of education in Nepal need change. For instance, schools here focus more on theoretical knowledge rather than practical explorations. I want to bring in an education system that will emphasize on teaching methodologies which are fun yet informative,” Shauhard says.
Likewise, 18-year-old Sangeet Khatri, who is a +2 graduate from Prasadi Academy, Kumaripati is still planning on what he wants to do in life. He shares, “I’m not completely determined about my goals yet. All I know right now is that I want to become a competent Civil Engineer. But I don’t have any idea regarding where I’d like to work or what all projects I’d want to get involved in. I guess I’ll get the idea after I start going to college.”
He also further talks about his interest in music and his aspiration of becoming a musician. “I’d love to have a band of my own,” he beams. Sangeet plans to excel in music and engineering side by side.
Discovering your passion
Before you can land your dream job, you need to discover what you’re passionate about. Some people know right away, while others need some poking and prodding. If you’re not sure, ask yourself the following questions:
• What do you do in your free time? Do you spend time alone or do you find yourself surrounded by people?
• What did you enjoy doing as a child? Make a list of what made you happy in your youth.
• What are your hobbies? Do you craft? Bake? Cook? Write down hobbies of yours, even if you aren’t actively pursuing them.
• Would you prefer to be your own boss or do you prefer not being the one in charge? Do you like working with others or are you better working by yourself?
Remember, only you can determine what you’re passionate about, so take the necessary time to figure it out!

Get an internship to land on your dream job
Attend job and career fairs
There’s nothing wrong with going to a career fair for the sole purpose of seeking an internship. Ask every company that is in your field if they hire interns or if they know any companies in their industry who do.
Seek an internship with the company you want to work for
While any internship is good for your resume, you want to start with the company you want to work for when you graduate. After all, 60 per cent of those who intern get a job offer. It may as well be with the right company. Focus on the right fit first, not location or ease.
Let people know you are looking for an internship
You can fail on your own or succeed with some help. Careers are all about networking, so start now. Ask everyone you know – parents, friends of parents, coaches, neighbors, and everyone who reads your Facebook status. A lot of people love to help those who are starting out. You just have to let them know you are eager to receive their help. Then follow up with any leads they provide to you.
Treat the internship like a semester-long interview
If you do get an internship, do it right. You have to impress your future employer. You are now on a semester long interview – like Trump’s Apprentice. You have to show up on time, dress appropriately, be enthusiastic, and work hard. Make them realize by the end of your internship that the company really needs you.
