Classes have been disrupted at Amarsingh Higher Secondary School following the dispute between CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist over appointment of school principal. The school is one of the richest in terms of resources and hence has drawn the attention of political parties.Political parties had earlier padlocked the administration office of the school, while students have padlocked the main gate of the school on Wednesday.
"We'll not unlock the gate until the school ensures peaceful environment," said one of the students.
Students said that they will continue the padlock unless the teachers resolve the dispute in consensus.
After school Principal Nawaraj Poudel resigned on June 17, school teachers Keshav Acharya and Tejasvi Baral are vying for the position of school principal. Acharya is backed by CPN-UML and Baral by UCPN (Maoist).
Before taking leave some two months ago, ex-principal Poudel had handed over his duties to Baral. But, later Poudel had handed over the responsibility to Acharya after his resignation on July 17.
Tenth graders of the school told Republica that they were compelled to padlock the school after some hooligans threatened them.
The students added that they had no interests in the appointment of school principal but argued that the principal must be selected through set procedures. They accused the teachers of politicizing the issue and hampering their studies.
The school has 2,500 students. The school management committee has not been formed for the last three years due to political wrangling. Only 50 percent examinees from the school passed SLC exams held last year.
