The formation of the organization to be headed by historian Ramesh Dhungel was formally announced amidst of gathering in Orchid Hotel at Tripureshwar in Kathmandu on Saturday.[break]
Members of the assembly include Surendra KC, Suresh Acharya, Adityaman Shrestha, Sugatratna Kansakar, Aananda Santoshi Rai, Laxmi Giri and Dilli Basyal. The leaders members of the newly-formed civil society organization claimed that scores of academicians, former bureaucrats and representatives from various sectors are willing to join the organization.
“The Citizens Assembly has been formed to exert pressure on state authorities, political leadership and policymakers to work for the interests of the country and the public,” reads the organization"s declaration.
While addressing the gathering attended by scores of participants, KC argued that they decided to form the organization as the country is heading toward a serious crisis.
“We have formed an independent and organized force namely the Citizen Assembly with a view to guiding the country in the right direction,” stated the declaration.
The organization has been formed at a time when the civil society that had become quite crucial in leading the popular people"s movement in 2006 has divided into various groups in the recent years.
