KATHMANDU, May 1: A Cabinet meeting on Sunday has decided to appoint Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Dhiraj Pratap Singh as the Inspector General of Nepal Police.

Although the Ministry of Home Affairs had recommended AIG Bishwa Raj Pokharel to the post, the Cabinet decided to appoint Singh to the coveted post.

Newly-appointed IGP Singh worked in the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). AIGs Bishwa Raj Pokharel, Rabindra Dhanuk including Dhiraj Pratap Singh were in the race for Nepal police chief.

But the government has appointed Singh as the new IGP, who was in the third place in terms of seniority .

As per Rule 41 of the Police Regulations-2014, the government may promote a candidate from AIG to the post of Inspector General of Police. However, decisions have to be made on the basis of seniority, efficiency, effectiveness, ability to take responsibility, ability to provide leadership and ability to encourage and mobilize the security personnel under them.

The current IGP Shailesh Thapa Chhetri and his batch of police officers are retiring from Sunday owing to 30 years of service limit. Singh will assume the leadership of the police from Sunday.
