Dhana Thapa takes sole lead

KATHMANDU, June 11: Army Officers´ Golf Club pro Dhana Thapa submitted a card of four-under 63 on Tuesday to take a one-stroke lead over pro Ramesh Adhikari after the second round of the Ghanashyam Open Golf Championship at the par-67 Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) in Kathmandu.



Thapa is on top of the leader-board with a 36-hole total of four-under 130 in the second event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2013-14. He had shot even-par 67 on Monday.



Overnight leader Adhikari is second with three-under 131 after he played two-under 65 on Tuesday. Joint overnight leader Ram Thapa shot two-over 69 to drop to third with a total score of one-over 135.



Thapa played two-under 31 on the front nine and shot two-under 32 on the back nine. His front nine included birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, while he shot birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. [break]



RNGC duo Yelamber Singh Adhikari and Nepal No 1 Shiva Ram Shrestha shared the fourth position at two-over 136. Adhikari played even-par 67 on Tuesay while Shrestha carded one-under 66 in the second round.



Three pros -- Rabi Khadka (67) and Deepak Thapa Magar (69) of RNGC along with Gokarna Golf Club pro Umesh Nagarkoti (69) -- were tied for sixth with a total score of five-over 139 each. Pashupati Sharma of Gokarna and CB Bhandari of RNGC shared the ninth position at 140.



The cut was applied at 13-over 147 with 21 pros and six amateurs making it to the final two rounds. Altogether 43 players -- 25 pros and 18 amateurs -- competed in the first two rounds. Other pros who made the cut include Jaya Ram Shrestha, Pradeep K Lama, Surya Prasad Sharma, Sunil Mizar, Ram Krishna Shrestha, Mani Rai, Sachin Bhattarai, Dhruba KC, Bishnu KC, Dipendra Rayamajhi and Om Thakuri.



In the amateur section, Tashi Tsering played three-over 70 for a total of four-over 138. He is two strokes ahead of Bikash Bogati and Dinesh Prajapati. Bogati played even-par 67 while Prajapati faltered to five-over 72.



The 72-hole event, sponsored by Nepal´s first professional golfer and advisor of Nepal Professional Golfers Association (NPGA) Ghanashyam Thapa, carries a total cash prize of Rs 300,000. The winner will get Rs 55,000 while others in the top 21 will also get cash prizes.
