KATHMANDU, Aug 23 : Former Nepali Congress (NC) president and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba appeared at his Kathmandu contact office in Chundevi on Sunday as the party’s “president,” despite no longer holding the position officially.
After returning to Nepal following five months of medical treatment, Deuba attended a formal event at the office, sitting at a desk bearing a nameplate identifying him as “President Sher Bahadur Deuba.”
Deuba returned to Nepal on August 12 after receiving treatment in Singapore and Hong Kong and visited the Chundevi office for the second time on Sunday. He had also gone there directly on the day he returned to Nepal.

He attended a tea reception organized by the Nepali Congress-affiliated Indigenous Nationalities Federation at the office on Sunday.
The office was established by Deuba’s faction in preparation for the party’s 15th general convention, with a separate room arranged for him.
A sign reading “President Sher Bahadur Deuba” has been placed outside the room, while the main desk where Deuba sits also carries the same title on its nameplate.
Former state minister for energy Purna Bahadur Tamang had said at a national gathering on August 14 that he had placed the nameplate himself without informing other party leaders.
Deuba did not participate in the Nepali Congress special general convention held from January 11 to 14. The Election Commission had recognized the party’s executive committee elected under Gagan Thapa’s leadership at the convention, a decision that was subsequently upheld by a Supreme Court division bench.
Deuba challenged the ruling through a review petition, and the Supreme Court has already granted permission for the review.
