Addressing a function organized by the Nepal Press Union (NPU) to mark the 33rd Memorial Day of late BP Koirala in the capital on Wednesday, Deuba argued that NSC would remain incomplete without participation of army chief. He also demanded amendment to the provision.Deuba said people's suggestions on the draft constitution would be taken seriously and duly incorporated into the new statute before promulgating it. "We won't compromise any fundamental values of democracy. Democracy cannot be sustainable without press freedom," he said.
Speaking on the occasion, NC Central Working Committee (CWC) member Arjun Narasingh KC said the ideals of late BP Koirala could be a guide for NC as the party is facing lack of any ideology. He also complained of lack of democracy within NC that led all struggles for democracy in the past.
KC urged media persons to write on the drawbacks in the draft statute.
NC CWC member and lawmaker Nabindra Raj Joshi recalled BP Koirala saying democracy without press freedom is incomplete. He also expressed happiness that the Constituent Assembly (CA) is set to fulfill the desire of late Koirala to draft the new statute through elected CA.
Commissioner at the National Information Commission (NIC) Kiran Kumar Pokharel said right to information needs to be enhanced in order to make democracy sustainable. He also argued that there should not be any limit or restrictions on the people's right to expression.
