Briefing Chairman of the Interim Election Government Khila Raj Regmi on the security situation across the country in the run up to the November 10 polls, heads of the security agencies - Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and National Intelligence Department- stated that they were ready to ensure election security. According to Chief Secretary Lilamani Paudel, all the security agencies were confident that they can ensure election security across the country.
Sources at the PMO said that Chairman Regmi instructed the security forces not to hesitate to use necessary tools, manpower and other resources against the forces aiming to disrupt the election.
Regmi also pointed out some lapses in coordination among the security agencies, and urged them to address them.
A security head said, “The government has fully backed us in the use of necessary forces for the success of the election.”
However, Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP) Kuber Singh Rana pointed out some complications regarding the logistics and other support for carrying out full proof security. Referring to the deployment of temporary police personnel and the implementation of the Integrated Security Plan prepared by the government, IGP Rana spotted some complications.
The security agencies also expressed concerns over the political parties, which are neglecting the request of the security agencies not to intensify their election campaigns.
In view of security threats, the security forces have also requested the parties not to coincide their election campaigns, which could lead to clashes.
In the meeting, Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Gaurav Shumsher JB Rana also briefed about his recent visit to the army´s mid division to oversee the deployment of NA staffs, besides the state of prisons, airport and other vital installations in the region.
According to Regmi´s Press Advisor Bimal Gautam, the meeting focused on creating conducive environment for ensuring free and fair election.
Home Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Inspector General of APF Kosh Raj Want and Director General of NID Moti Bahadur Gurung were also present in the meeting held at the Prime Minister´s Office, Singha Durbar.
