Maharjan was the only Nepali player to win medal during the 16th Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China about a year ago. He had won bronze medal at the event.[break]
The 27-year-old boxer appealed to vote for him on Tuesday after receiving the Special Award during the NSJF Pulsar Mid-western Regional Award organized by Nepal Sports Journalist Forum, Banke branch in Nepalgunj.
Sipora Gurung (volleyball), Sagar Thapa (football), Rahul BK (cricket) and Shreya Dhital (swimming) are other contenders for the Popular Player of the Year award.
The winner of the Popular Player of the Year award will be declared on the basis of SMS votes. However, Maharjan has not been involved in collecting funds for SMS voting. "It is better to get votes winning the hearts of fans," the light heavyweight boxer said, adding, "Only a real player can win the award."
Bosigaun locals and Bosigaun Sports Club will conduct prayers at Bhairavnath Temple on Saturday for Maharjan´s success.
Maharjan, who has 29 national medals and three international medals, was a karate player before he switched over to boxing. Maharjan has been appointed the assistant coach of boxing for a year by the National Sports Council two months ago.
In the initial phase of his career Maharjan´s parents did not want their son to be a boxer but Maharjan had other plans. "But when I enter home with medal they are all pleased," Maharjan said.
"During childhood I wanted to become a teacher," Maharjan said, adding, "Now I will try to dedicate 10 more years of my life for boxing."
