POKHARA, Jan 26: Departmental giant Tribhuvan Army Club recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ruslan Three Star Club to enter the semifinal of the 14th Aaha-Rara Gold Cup at the Pokhara Stadium in Pokhara on Monday.

Runner-up of the National League football beat the champion of the league with the match winning goal from Deep Lama. Deep scored the only goal of the match in the 30th minute.

The goal came after man-of-the-match Deep's 30-yard scorcher hit the top bar before crossing the goal-line.

Army will face host Sahara in the semifinal as the latter has already booked its place in the last four.

Army could have doubled the tally in the third minute of the first half injury time as Bharat Khawas failed to score despite beating Three Star goalie Bishal Shrestha, who joined recently the club leaving Manang Marshyangdi Club.

Bharat's aim to double the advantage was denied after Three Star's Bishnu Sunuwar cleared the ball from the box.

Similarly, Amrit Basnet of Army missed a goal-scoring chance in the 67th minute as his shot from the danger zone was punched by Three Star goalie Bishal.

Three Star also failed to convert the chances it had created throughout the match.

It failed to take a lead in the match after Anil Ojha's shot off Bijay Gurung's cross went inches outside of the post in 22nd minute and African recruit Segun missed golden opportunity to level the score in one-on-one situation. Similarly, Segun missed another chance five minutes later despite beating the Army goalie Sushil Shrevastav as the shot rebounded hitting the cross bar.

After the match, Three Star coach Rajendra Tamang said the team failed to win the match due to the absence of its four major players. Bikram Lama, Jagajeet Shrestha, Alen Neupane and Prakash Budhathoki returned from Bangladesh on Saturday after playing the Bangabandhu Gold Cup.

"Their absence affected our performance in the match," said Tamang. "The match was competitive but we failed to execute the chances that were created," added Tamang, who blamed the referee for failing to properly judge the mistakes committed during the match.

While Army coach Megharaj KC said that the win against the league

champion was not an easy one.

"The matches between Army and Three are always competitive and one does not take another lightly," said KC, adding that Army has won four matches out of six played between the sides recently while two matches have ended in draws.

KC said that the match against host Saraha will also be a competitive one. "Sahara is as competitive a team as Three Star and we will have to work even harder," he added.
