Police have confirmed over a thousand deaths from the villages of Sangachowk, Thulo Surubari, Pipaldanda,among others. The police added they expect the death toll to increase further as new information is collected.Meanwhile, serious damage has been caused by a landslide in Tatopani. The casualty figures are still not clear as authorities have been unable to make contact with the village.
A helicopter that flew for search and rescue operation at Tatopani could not find a proper place to land.
Shamsher Nepali, a police constable at Border Police Post is a confirmed fatality while police inspector Keshav Shah, whose condition is said to be critical, is still awaiting treatment.
Women in rescue work
As most of the male population of Sindhupalchowk have gone abroad for employment, rescue efforts in the district are been carried out by women. In Kunchok VDC, where 60 people lost their lives, women have been busy assisting the survivors and carrying out rescue efforts.
Dead bodies have been piling up in the local river, exposing locals to diseases, according to local stakeholders.
NA chopper starts rescue operation in Sindhupalchowk
Since Monday, Nepal Army's chopper has started carrying out rescue operations in Melamchi, Bhimtar, Yanlakot, among other affected areas in Sindhupalchowk district. The injured and wounded were airlifted to Kathmandu by NA's choppers, who have already made more than 20 such trips. Actual number of wounded is yet to be ascertained.
Missing foreign tourists of The Last Resort
The whereabouts of foreign tourists staying at The Last Resort of Tatopani, bordering China, is still unknown, according to authorities. It is reported that many tourists were staying at the resort at the time of the earthquake. Authorities have, however, failed to pinpoint the numbers of missing foreigners and their nationalities.
Due to disruptions in transportation services at Dolalghat, Barhabise and Tatopani road sections of the Araniko Highway, rescue work at the resort has not start.
