Dashain shopping: celebrities talk!

KATHMANDU, Oct 11: Dashain is undeniably one of the biggest and also the most important festivals of Hindus. Apart from performing elaborate rituals, almost everyone does shopping on the occasion of this great festivity.

Dashain is always a great festive occasion to buy clothes, accessories for home or gadgets for personal use. [break]

However, as the festival offers you a wide range of choices, it is always a good idea to help make more informed choices on what you really treasure the most to invest or indulge in without mindlessly following the trend.

Republica’s Binisha Sharma caught up with some young celebrities to talk about what they would choose to purchase this festive season.

This Dashain, I am buying the latest MacBook. I was thinking of buying it from the day since my brother had it. It is truly nice, small and feminine and so I am thinking of buying one.

Generally, I don’t wear accessories. But this Dashain, I am buying a nice watch, most probably, a branded one. And, as far as clothes are concerned, I am looking forward to having anything from sarees to jeans or shorts. Like other young girls, I have always been fascinated to do shopping and I am planning for a grand shopping this year.

I have always loved this festival, most importantly, during my childhood. Even during those days, I bought lots of clothes like kurtas and jeans.

Buying clothes during Dashain is almost like a culture for everyone. It doesn’t mean we don’t buy clothes on other occasions. But in Dashain, buying new stuffs is developing as a tradition that everyone follows, including me.

As my cell phone looks old now I want to buy a new one, most probably, Nokia’s latest edition. Also, I am thinking of buying a few jeans and converse, adding one more to my converse collection.

I usually wear converse because I find them very comfortable, nothing trendier like this!

Buying new stuff during childhood was a completely different experience and was so exciting and it still is. It’s just that the demands have notched up!

Last year, I bought a simple black colored iPod. This year, I am thinking of buying a karaoke mike so that I can record songs at great ease. I have come to love singing these days!

Also, I have got two pearls gifted by my mother. I am thinking of making two gold rings with those pearls. They will have the same designs -- one for me and the other for my mother.

Talking about clothes, I often go for shopping and buy clothes. So, I don’t need special occasions like Dashain to buy clothes. But since winter is approaching, I am planning to purchase coats and sweaters.

It’s common for Nepalis to do a lot of shopping during Dashain as they regard the festival as auspicious time and they want to celebrate it to the fullest. Especially for children, there is every reason to believe that festival is the best time to butter-up their parents and get what their heart could desire.

Well, this year, I want to purchase an original iPod modeled by Apple company. I’m for the one with the iPod dock, so that I can play and listen to music anywhere I like, be it at home or in my car or anywhere else. I have always wanted to buy this.

Also, I am thinking of buying a 14” laptop because it is portable. Besides these two things, I am thinking of buying an SLR camera too, and take some photography classes during the Dashain holidays and turn into a good photo journalist may be?

Most likely, I will buy a couple of belts this Dashain because I think it is essential to have a fine and complete dress-up. Also, I am thinking of buying some small earrings because I think a pair of cute earrings enhances one’s beauty.

Apart from this, I will buy jeans, and as we are nearing winter season, I’ll buy a couple of overcoats.

I have been buying new clothes during Dashain ever since I was a child. I used to wear only new ones while visiting relative’s homes to receive tika. So, shopping is an annual activity for me. Once, I asked my mom to get me a ridiculously expensive jacket, which she did buy.

My parents still do buy me clothes but in return I give them presents!
