On Wednesday, an indefinite general strike was called by the Tharuhat Joint Struggle Committee, and since then all activities in Udayapur, among 21 other districts, have ground to a halt.
Nine demonstrators were injured during the clashes with police in Gaighat, and officials said the curfew order was extended to bring the situation under control in Gaighat Bazaar.
Normal life in several areas in Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha and Dhanusha districts has been paralyzed by the strike. The Tharu organization launched a series of protests on Wednesday, accusing the government of failing to implement the agreement reached on March 14 between the government and the organization.
