Curfew continues in Rajbiraj

RAJBIRAJ, July 18: The Saptari district administration extended curfew at the district headquarters Rajbiraj on Satruday as the situation after the gunning down of a killing by police showed no sign of decreasing. The area is under curfew since Friday evening after police killed a man during a clash with villagers who had smuggled in fertilizer from India. [break]


The curfew started from 7 am Saturday.



However, agitating locals staged demonstration in Rajbiraj by carrying the body of the slain man, Akhilendra Yadav, 25, despite the curfew. A funeral was planned for 11 am Saturday.







Agitators have announced indefinite shut down in Rajbiraj. While business are completely closed, only the vehicles belonging to emergency services and media have been allowed to operate.



Various political parties in Saptari district have demanded resignation of Home Minister Bhim Rawal over the incident. Slain Yadav is the cousin of Nepali Congress Saptai district vice president Dinesh Yadav.



A meeting of various political parties held Friday had decided to call general a shutdown in the district. Among others, they have asked the government to declare slain Yadav a martyr, file murder case against the APF personnel involved in the shooting, suspension of chief district officer and district police chief.



Likewise, agitating locals have also demanded treatment for all five injured in the course of police firing and compensation for the victim´s family, according to Dinesh Kumar Yadav, coordinator of a struggle committee.



Saptari district administration said police opened fire after the villagers attempted to snatch arms.
