COVID-19 detected in two people at Birgunj border crossing

PARSA, Jan 12: The COVID-19 infection was found in two persons through antigen test conducted at the 'Health Desk' operating at the Birgunj crossing.

Lab technician Nisha Sah said that both of them were infected with the new variant of COVID-19, JN.1. 

According to laboratory technician Sah, the infection was found in one Nepali citizen on Thursday and one Indian citizen on Wednesday. Antigen tests were conducted on more than 100 people on Wednesday and Thursday at the health desk of the border crossing between Nepal and India.

Both of them had traveled by train from Kolkata. The Nepali citizen has been kept in the isolation ward of Narayani Hospital in Birgunj, while the Indian citizen was handed over to the Indian police on Wednesday.

The samples taken from them have been sent to the provincial health laboratory in Janakpur for gene sequencing, said Suman Chandra Thakur, public health inspector of Birgunj Metropolitan City.

At present, around 200 to 250 people are screened a day and 50 to 60 people are tested for antigens at the health desk.
