COVID-19 cases surge among security personnel deployed at Kathmandu Valley transit points

KATHMANDU, Sept 9: The number of security personnel infected with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spiked in Kathmandu Valley in recent days. Most of the infected police personnel are those deployed at various transit points of Kathmandu Valley. 

The security personnel deployed at eastern transit point -- Sanga-- of Kathmandu Valley, are found highly vulnerable to the COVID-19. Of the ten security personnel tested for the virus, eight police personnel were diagnosed with COVID-19 on Tuesday, according to Chief District Health Officer of Kavrepalanchowk Dr Narendra Jha. “So far, as many as 40 security personnel have contracted the virus in Kavrepalanchowk district,” he added.

Earlier, only two of the security personnel deployed at the Sanga transit point were tested positive for the COVID-19. The number has now jumped to 10. A joint team of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) personnel have been mobilized at the transit point.

According to COVID-19 Prevention and Command Post in Kavrepalanchowk, a total 19 police personnel from federal police office in Banepa, 10 personnel of the Armed Police Force, eight personnel of the Nepali Army at Dhulikhel and three personnel of the District Police Office Dhulikhel have contracted coronavirus.

As of Wednesday morning, two individuals have succumbed to COVD-19 in Kavrepalanchowk district, while 159 others, who had earlier tested positive for the virus, have successfully recovered and returned home.
