Court records statements of 15 accused in gold smuggling

MORANG, May 7: Morang District Court has recorded statements of 15 individuals among the total 63 accused in gold smuggling.

 

Court Registrar Nawaraj Dulal informed that the court has completed recording statements of 15 accused individuals on Sunday. Court officials had recorded the statements in the presence of Judge Narayan Prasad Sharma.

The court had recorded the statement of Tejraj Malla Thakuri, Mohan Kafle, Madan Prasad Ghimire, Narendra Karki, Lakpa Sherpa and Rajan Kumar starting Thursday. On Sunday, the court had started recording statements of nine others. The nine include Bhujung Gurung, Rajendra Kumar Shakya, Mahabir Prasad Golyan Agrawal, Lal Bahadur Magar, Birendra Man Shrestha, Sambir Prasad Tolenge, Bal Krishna Shrestha and Doram Khatri.

 

Last Wednesday, the Office of the District Attorney (ODA), Morang, had filed a case in the infamous 33 kg gold smuggling case, accusing 63 people including six police officials of racketeering, gold smuggling, kidnapping and murder.

In a 153-page charge sheet lodged at the District Court, Morang, the ODA has demanded over Rs 17 billion in fine for around 38 tons of gold that the prosecutors claim the accused smuggled since 2015.
