KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Nepal Army on Monday formed a three-member committee to probe into the repatriation of its Major Niranjan Basnet by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations from Chad. [break]

Brig Gen Pradip Bahadur Singh has been named head of the court of inquiry while Colonel Shiva Ram Kharel and Lieutenant Colonel Rabindra KC are the members, according to Major Gen BA Kumar Sharma, the head of the legal department of the army.

“The court of inquiry is beginning its work from Tuesday,” Sharma told myrepublica.com.

Sharma said that a peacekeeper can be sent back on disciplinary, medical and compassionate grounds set by the UN. “But Basnet has not been repatriated on these grounds,” Sharma explained about the need of court of inquiry on the case.

Basnet, who faces the charge of involvement in the murder of 15-year-old Maina Sunar during the conflict time, was sent back from Chad on December 13 following a publication of a news by myrepublica.com on November 27.

When asked about the deadline set for the committee, Sharma said, “The timeframe has not been fixed.”

The court of inquiry has been formed amidst widespread demands to hand over Basnet to the Kavre District Court where a murder case against the army officer is sub-judice.
