Taplejung, Jan 6: Six people from Taplejung who were sent to prison on the charge of raping and sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl have been cleared of the charges.
In the third week of July last year, Taplejung District Court ordered four men and two women to be remanded in prison on the charges of rape and human trafficking and transportation. Six persons under investigation were remanded in custody.
Break taboos to reinstate rape victims
According to the court order, four men were sent to Taplejung Jail while the two women were sent to Panchthar Jail. There is no women's prison in Taplejung. The court ordered them to be jailed for pretrial detention, contrary to subsection (1) of sections 3 and 4 of the Human Trafficking and Transportation Control Act 2064 and subsection (1) of section 219 of the Civil Code 2074.
However, on Thursday, the court heard the case and ruled that the plaintiff's claim was not backed by sufficient evidence.
