A couple of Madi Mulkharka VDC-4 of Sankhuwasaba took a difficult decision and has confined their son, Agam, in a cage for the last 18 years. Agam, who is physically disabled, also suffers from mental illness. [break]
Tired of Agam´s unruliness, his parents had no choice but to confine him in a cage behind their house. He was only two-years-old when he was confined.
“He would not be safe if let free. It is better to put him in a cage for his safety than to take risks,” said Lekhmani Gurung, Agam´s father. “However, we close him indoors during the night,” he added.
Agam has a hearing loss and his legs are too weak. He can´t feed himself. Talking to Republica, Agam´s mother Tara shared she found that her son was mentally ill when he was just two-years-old.
“We did everything to cure him but nothing helped,” said Tara. “If we had enough money, we would have taken him to a good doctor,” she said. Lekmani feels the remoteness of their village has made matters worse. “It takes around four hours for us to reach the VDC office and an entire day to reach Chayanpur and Area Administration Office,” said Lekmani.
Meanwhile, Secretary of Sankhuwasaba District Disability Association Ganesh Rai expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities for doing nothing to alleviate the plight of Gurung couple.
