Counterfeit Nepali currencies rampant in bordering Tarai districts

RAUTAHAT, Dec 20: Counterfeit Nepali currencies are found rampant in the bordering Tarai districts in recent months. It is suspected that a lot of counterfeit Nepali currencies entered Nepal as police personnel have seized fake currencies from different places across the country. Most of the counterfeit Nepali rupees are seized mainly from areas along the Nepal-India border.

RAUTAHAT, Dec 20: Counterfeit Nepali currencies are found rampant in the bordering Tarai districts in recent months. It is suspected that a lot of counterfeit Nepali currencies entered Nepal as police personnel have seized fake currencies from different places across the country. Most of the counterfeit Nepali rupees are seized mainly from areas along the Nepal-India border.


In Sarlahi and Rautahat, fake Nepali rupees were seized on different dates and those arrested with fake Nepali rupees were found to be Indian nationals. The Armed Police Force (APF) Sarlahi has arrested two people from Malangawa of Sarlahi district on Saturday along with 115,000 fake Nepali rupees. Both the arrested are Indian nationals. Surendra Mahato, 37, of Sonvarsha Ward No. 6, Chilaritol, Sonam Varsha Village, Sitamarhi Police Station, India and Pramod Kumar Nepali, 48, of Sonbandha Village, Lalbandi Chilari Ward No. 1, were arrested by the APF personnel in Sarlahi with fake Nepali rupees.


Earlier, Rautahat police had arrested two Indian nationals on December 16 along with 69,500 fake Nepali rupees. Among the arrested are Bikas Jaiswal, 26, of Sreepur Gram Panchayat, Kabaiya and Ajay Prasad, 32, of the same place.

Meanwhile, Rautahat police had seized 9,93,500 counterfeit Nepali rupees from four Mathiya of Ishnath Nagar Municipality of Rautahat on October 10. Ishnath's Mathiya is also a village connected to the Nepal-India border area.


It has become difficult to find out how much counterfeit Nepali currencies have entered the Nepali market. Most of the counterfeit Nepali currencies are with the denomination of Rs 1000. In some cases, fake Nepali rupees with the denomination of Rs 500 were also seized.


Experts have suggested taking necessary caution as the increase in the trade of counterfeit Nepali currencies will have a negative impact on the country's economy.
