Conservationists awarded for their efforts in preserving biodiversity

KATHMANDU, Sept 23: Around half a dozen individuals were felicitated for their efforts in biodiversity conservation in Nepal on the occasion of National Conservation Day.



On Monday, various organizations working for biodiversity conservation and related government authorities observed the seventh National Conservation Day, with a call for snow leopard conservation and protection of the Himalayas in the country. [break]



At the program, WWF Nepal honored one organization and five individuals through the Abraham Conservation Awards, Matthew Preece and Yeshi Choden Lama Young Conservation Leader Award, WWF Media in Conservation Award and a Special Conservation Award.



Sundari Community Forest Users´ Group of Amarapuri, Nawalparasi was felicitated with the Abraham Conservation Award under the organization category with a citation and a cash prize of Rs 50,000, whereas Indra Prasad Sapkota, planning officer at the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation and Prakash BK, a social mobilizer were awarded the same award under the Individual category along with a cash prize of Rs 25,000.



Likewise, Pitamber Sigdel, a journalist with Annapurna Post, bagged WWF Media in Conservation Award, while Bikash Pathak Chhetri, coordinator of the Community-Based Anti-Poaching Unit under Kerunga Buffer Zone Users´ Committee in Chitwan, received Matthew Preece & Yeshi Choden Lamal Young Conservation Leader Award. Chandra Kala Budha, treasurer at Taranga-Siddhachuli Buffer Zone Users´ Community in Bardia, was felicitated with a Special Conservation Award.



Similarly, Bird Conservation Nepal provided a Lifetime Achievement Award to Harisharan Nepali for his remarkable contribution to the field of bird conservation.

On the National Conservation Day, many students were also awarded with scholarships.



The government started to observe September 23 as the National Conservation Day from 2008 in memory of the conservationists who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter accident on September 23, 2006 at Ghunsa, Kangchenjunga.
