This morning, as I settled in my desk, I received an invitation for a photo exhibition entitled ‘Confessions of an Amateur Photographer’. It was from Thapa and he totally surprised me. Not that I doubted his passion for photography, but he mentioned not a single word about it yesterday, save for his humor, “I have been trying my hand at short stories, but sometimes it sounds like a medical history,” when I shared with him that my experiences with short stories were more like a descriptive reporting of a disaster. We both laughed about how our professions came between our short story attempts, but Thapa, who is eons ahead of me, is now on a different maiden voyage altogether, with his first photo exhibition to be held on Tuesday, December 23rd at The Himalayan Kitchen/Art Gallery. “My exhibition of photographs doesn´t stick to any particular theme. It’s my confession. Indeed a confession of an amateur photographer,” he says, “my subjects include landscape, portrait and digital abstract paintings.”
Thapa has been practicing photography for over a year now. One can dig out his dedication in his blog: http://www.photoblog.com/riteshthapa. In his invitation, he borrows a quote from Pablo Picasso, “I have discovered photography. Now, I can kill myself. I have nothing else to learn,” This from a guy who believes, “you write what you know... I am a little ignorant in this realm. Just in case, for one word description – ‘Optimistic’”.
“My passion for photography has urged me to take this step where I can find a platform to show what I knew, and now I sincerely request all viewers to give an unbiased judgment and help me excel in photography. This is my first exhibition,” says Thapa whose Facebook status today reads - “Ritesh Thapa is understanding that - ‘Man´s real home is not a house, but the road, and that life itself is a journey to be walked on foot’.”
