Compensation eludes family of Maternity Hospital victims

KATHMANDU, April 17: Even after seven months of the incident, the government has not provided any compensation to the family of the victims who lost died due to infection at the maternity hospital in Thapathali.



The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) had pledged to provide compensation to Lata´s family, who died as a result of the infection. [break]



The ministry had also committed to implement the suggestions recommended by a probe committee that was formed to investigate the real cause of infection. The seven-member probe committee that comprised of representatives from the MoHP, the hospital, experts and victim´s family members submitted its report within two weeks.



"Neither has the government unveiled the report nor has it implemented the suggestion," said Suman KC, Lata´s husband. He said that the hospital had assured to provide lifelong free treatment to their baby but has not has not given anything.



The committee, however, had recommended the ministry to give Rs 300,000 compensation to the family of the deceased but cabinet meeting of previous government decided to give Rs 100,000. The relatives of other victims claim that the infection spread due to the negligence of the hospital administration.



Krishna Hari Khatri, one of the victims´ representatives in the probe committee, claimed that the infection spread due to hospital´s negligence. "The government has accepted that it was hospital´s negligence but has not taken any action against the guilty," said Khattri. He asked the ministry to unveil the report and demanded stern action against the guilty so that such incidents do not repeat in future.



Khatri also said that the hospital lacked consultant doctors and nurses. He alleged that the hospital authority has been employing trainee nurses by taking financial benefits from nursing colleges, and putting the lives of patients at risk.



Lata Gurung, 26, of Suichatar-2, Kathmandu, who was admitted to the hospital for delivery died due to infection that spread in the hospital. The hospital had also referred seven other women to private centers for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facility, after their health deteriorated.
