KATHMANDU, Jan 2: A parliamentary committee has unanimously approved an amendment to the Prevention of Corruption Act-2059, which grants the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) new powers.
The bill, passed by the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee on Thursday, includes provisions that enhance the CIAA's ability to investigate corruption. One important provision allows the CIAA to access the telephone records of individuals under investigation with court permission. This enables the CIAA to intercept calls or request data from relevant institutions for investigative purposes.

The amendment also gives the CIAA five additional investigation methods: controlled investigation (controlled delivery), undercover operations, telephone or media interception with court approval, access to the structure or system of electronic devices, and continuous surveillance of individuals under investigation to gather evidence. If the full parliament approves the bill, these additional powers will strengthen the CIAA’s efforts in fighting corruption.
