Thapa, a Hong Kong University student who hails from Burtibang in Baglung, Nepal, was one of the 51 awardees among Hong Kong residents. The awards, announced to mark Hong Kong’s handover to China on July 1, will be handed over to the recipients on October 1, the National Day, by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive.[break]
Thapa carved a niche among Nepalis in Hong Kong as an intellectual and has been involved in various activities in support of his Nepali brethren. Apart from running a program in Nepali on Hong Kong’s government-run radio, Thapa is also conducting a research on the education status of minorities in Hong Kong. His popularity even led to him to become an ethnic minority committee member of the DAB Party that supports the Hong Kong government.
“I’ve been working for the last 17 years to uplift the educational status of Nepalis living in Hong Kong and promoting their concerns with the government here,” says Thapa, expressing his happiness for the prestigious recognition. “I would like to share this award with all my fellow Nepalis living in Hong Kong,” he added.
